Dr Craig Fairgrieve
Knowledge Transfer Manager
What do you do at the KCMC?
I am the Knowledge Transfer Manager for the University of Liverpool and the University of Bolton. My role is to build collaborations between the universities and industry, establishing relationships and supporting them through the innovation and commercialisation process.
This involves identifying partners whose ambition for their technology and business align, then finding the appropriate funding opportunities and supporting these through application, implementation and delivery.
What are your strengths?
My background is in Industrial Research, working on sustainable materials which gives me an understanding of the challenges of developing new materials which are both technically and economically viable. However, throughout my career I have worked in partnership with universities to deliver, giving me an insight into the challenges and opportunities which occur at the interface between companies and universities.
Why do you enjoy working at the KCMC?
Combining cutting edge science with real world applications, the KCMC is an organisation with science at its core, linked directly to industry delivering to the challenges we face as a society.
Interacting with both university researchers, our colleagues at CPI and the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and industrial partners gives a unique perspective across the innovation ecosystem for materials chemistry.
What area of materials science excites you?
The future of energy storage as we move away from hydrocarbons is a fundamental challenge which links the traditional industries of the North West with the research capabilities of our Universities. It is not a challenge with one solution with opportunities stretching from new materials for batteries, through catalysis to the generation and storage of hydrogen.
